Learn To Glow Today

Here's what I know, and it is very basic: Our Sun's electromagnetic output peaks in the "visible" range. This range consists of all of the "colors" we perceive with our eyes, but the range is relatively narrow compared to total EM spectrum length. Furthermore, our atmosphere's physical attributes block out higher frequency wavelengths, and some lower frequencies.

So, I see how organisms on Earth, through evolution, adopted the ability of sight to take advantage of this dominant energy and use it for the purpose of navigating the world around us. But why does prolonged or intense exposure to infrared and UV cause our skin to chemically change, but prolonged exposure to visible light is harmless? It is after all such a narrow range, and sandwiched between two harmful frequencies, that it seems unlikely that it would be harmless. Is it that Earth life-matter has evolved to be indestructible to light?
