What Are Essential Oils And How Do They Work?
Essential oils are very powerful chemicals which should never be applied directly to the skin undiluted because of its high concentration. When applied to the skin essential oils are believed to be absorbed into the bloodstream. Essential oils are equipped with compounds which aid in healing physical conditions like health, beauty, hygiene and even the mental health. In order to apply the essential oils into the skin, it must be diluted using a base or a carrier oil, which are pure vegetable oils. Great examples of carrier oils are sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil and grape seed oil. They can applied to the skin through aromatherapy massage, used in a bath and applying or rubbing to affected areas in case of an illness.
Inhaling aromatherapy essential oils is believed to offer both physical and psychological benefits. The aroma of aromatherapy essential oils stimulates the brain to trigger a reaction. The natural chemicals found in these essential oils are then drawn into the lungs which can supply physical benefits as well. Experts believe the sense of smell may play a role. The smell receptors in your nose communicate with parts of your brain (the amygdala and hippocampus) that serve as storehouses for emotions and memories.
When you breathe in essential oil molecules, it stimulates these parts of your brain and influence physical, emotional, and mental health. For example, lavender essential oil is believed to stimulate the activity of brain cells in the amygdala similar to the way some sedative medications work.
You can enjoy aromatherapy in a number of ways like:
- Direct inhalation - place 3-4 drops of an essential oil onto a tissue. Place the tissue near your nose and inhale
- Steam inhalation - boil 2 cups of water. Put 3-7 drops of essential oil into the water. Place your nose at least 12" away from the steam and inhale. Steam inhalation can help with colds and influenza. Use of energizing or relaxing oils can also make this method useful any time of day or night.
- Room freshener: you can use aromatherapy essential oils as a room freshener by using an aromatherapy diffuser or a lamp scent ring available in different aromatherapy companies.
- Repellent - many essential oils including citronella, lavender, and peppermint act as a natural repellent against insects. Sprinkle a few drops of essential oil onto tissues or cotton balls and place near your doorways and windows to help repel insects.
