how can you tell that the radio (transciever) has long range capacity to communicate?
am comparing between motorola talkabout and Kenwood portable radios.
does higher wattage means higher/longer range? from what i see, motorola has up to 1watts while kenwood up to 5 watts.
Now, how about their frequency? does choosing high frequency (channels) can increase range?
from what i see, motorola has channels ranging 400Mhz, while kenwood ranging 100+Mhz.
pls advice which should i look up (wattage or freq.) to determine if the unit is capable transmitting longer range.

You are apparently considering radios that operate in the FRS (Family Radio Service) bands. These are restricted by law to low transmitter powers for license-free operation, and allow higher power operation with licensing.
The biggest factors affecting range are the terrain between the stations and the relative height of the transceivers. A clear unobstructed path between the stations will give greatest range. Don't expect too much if you are inside an automobile. The stub antennas on most of the transceivers are not particularly efficient, especially up near your face.
